The Liberian Association of Michigan, located in Detroit’s historically rich Brightmoor neighborhood, is undergoing renovations that will significantly enhance both the community center and the surrounding area. Originally constructed in 1956, the 11,524-square-foot building, located in the Harmony Village neighborhood, will benefit from these updates, ensuring it remains a vital hub for the local community.

The renovation design was led by Detroit based design studio w/Purpose. Their specialization in creative retrofits of existing buildings and spaces inspired them to collaborate with the Liberian Association of Michigan on a unique entry and lobby experience.  The project includes Phase One ADA renovations of 1,150 square feet (interior) and 2,200 square feet (exterior), prioritizing accessibility elements, parking safety, and equity in entry and exit egress. The scope also addresses lighting, new partition walls, doors, flooring, and safety upgrades.

By considering the needs and values of the community on elements regarding accessibility and safety but also on the cultural reflection of the Liberian community. w/Purpose integrated elements into the architectural plan that symbolize and honor Liberian heritage while creating a welcoming, functional environment. This approach is reflected in the choice of materials, colors, and spatial design, ensuring that the renovated space serves as both a hub for community activities and a cultural landmark.
